Latin obsolescere (to fall into disuse, grow old), from ob- (away) + an old root related to solere (to be accustomed); a thing that has simply gone out of use.
A state a thing enters once the house has moved past it, carrying no verdict on whether the thing ever worked. Obsolescence says the world changed, not that the thing failed.
